3 Ways to Save on a Summer Vacation

If you’re like most Americans you’re probably gearing up for a summer vacation. Whether you’re flying far or staying close it’s important to make your vacation budget last. There are numerous ways to enjoy a relaxing vacation without breaking the bank.

Here are 3 ways to help stretch your dollar on this summer’s getaway.

1. Save on Transportation

We all know that it’s better to purchase a flight in advance to get a lower price. Are you saving money on transportation costs once you reach your destination? Renting a car and paying for gas can be costly. Consider using a rideshare service to get around especially if you don’t plan on spending a lot of time behind the wheel. If you’re visiting a larger city try the carpool option. It can save you between 20-40% on a ride. Another cost-effective option is using public transportation. Most U.S. cities have either buses and/or trains that can be a decent mode of transportation if you’re willing to give it a try. If public transportation isn’t accessible another good option is renting a bike. It’s a great way to save money and get a little exercise at the same time. Consider renting a bike for more than just one afternoon to see significant savings.

2. Save on Food & Drink

Eating out while on vacation can add up fast. Making one meal a day can pay dividends at the end of your trip, and two is even better. Once you reach your destination visit a local grocery store and pick up some essential food items for breakfast and lunch. If you’re traveling by air avoid costly airport snacks, and pack your own. Airports are notorious for having overpriced restaurants and refreshments, mostly because the cost to operate is really high. If the water is safe to drink where you’re going, take an empty reusable water bottle with you to save money. Once you reach your destination you will have one less thing to purchase. Lastly don’t be afraid to check out local markets and mobile eateries. You may be surprised by the quality of food and lower prices compared to highly attended big name restaurants.

3. Save on Fun Activities

Enjoying the attractions while on vacation doesn’t have to be a budget buster. Take advantage of the numerous online resources that offer local discounts and great deals like Groupon. If you enjoy live music ask the locals where the best bands play and avoid expensive concert tickets. If you enjoy the outdoors visiting parks and/or camping can help reduce the amount of money spent on hotel accommodations. There are numerous other ways to save money on your next trip that I failed to mention. Having the mindset that saving money during your vacation is as important as saving money for a vacation is all it takes.
